Alison Coaten, a graduate of Loughborough College of Art and Design, currently lives and works in Lincolnshire.
Throughout her life Alison has maintained a deep fascination with the human desire to make sense of existence through religion, myth and folklore and its use of art to create concrete images of worship in the forms of icons and idols.
After working in mixed media for her degree, Alison returned to clay, preferring its immediacy and flexibility. She hand sculpts in stoneware, using a limited palette of matt white crackle glaze, gold lustre and Indian ink to accentuate surface detail. Alison’s work is both striking and serene, invoking the duality that is inherent in her exploration of reverential iconography.
