Carol Dewart

Born in Scotland in 1957, Carol Dewart RSW RGI PAI graduated with a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting from Glasgow School of Art in 1981. She was winner of the Emmy Sachs award and received a John and Mabel Craig Award. She had a Postgraduate year of Drawing and Painting, Glasgow School of Art, 1982 and was awarded a Travelling Scholarship. During her time at Glasgow School of Art, she also studied Embroidery and Weaving for one year under the guidance of Chrissie White and Hannah Frew Patterson.

Texture, pattern and light are the key elements in Carol’s paintings. By changing any of these factors a painting can be constantly
evolving with little variation in the actual subject matter. The introduction of a specific texture or pattern can define the mood of the painting. By integrating both disciplines Carol’s work develops in many directions. She particularly likes to work in watercolour and gouache because of the purity of the medium. It is direct, lively and very free. These qualities take you on a journey and often the outcome is nowhere near the original starting point.

Throughout her career Carol has been given numerous awards, including the Joe Hargan Award (Paisley Art Institute 2024), the John Gray Award ( RSW 2019 ), the Louise Annand Award (Glasgow Society of Woman Artists 2018), the Armour Award (Royal Glasgow Institute 2016) and the Concept Art Award(Paisley Art Institute 2012).
