Known for her watercolours of flowers and plants, Jenny Matthews’ approach to the medium combines her interest in detailed work with abstract effects created by water and pigments. Spontaneity and colour are central themes, with an invocation of vivacity and joy.
Jenny studied Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1986. Since then, she has regularly been exhibiting in galleries around the UK. For the last 4 years, Jenny leads the Scottish group of artists at the international watercolour convention in Italy, ‘FabrianoinAcquarello’.
Jenny is known for winning 2 prizes at the Royal Watercolour Society in London. She was also shortlisted for the international watercolour prize ‘Marche d’Acqua’ in 2016. This was followed in 2017 by a 2-week artist residency at Fabriano’s Museum of Paper and Watermark. Jenny works from her Edinburgh studio, but when the flowers are in bloom, she can be found painting in her garden.
