Born in Dumbartonshire where he continues to live and work, David Smith RSW studied at Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Print Studio and Latrobe University in Melbourne, Australia. A past President of the Glasgow Group of Artists, he is a recipient of numerous awards including the David Cargill Prize in 2001 and more recently the Fabriano Residency Award at the 2018 RSW annual exhibition.
A keen hillwalker and mountain climber, David has travelled across the world but the coastlines and landscapes of his home country continue to be his greatest source of inspiration.
As a plein air artist, David paints and sketches on location to quickly capture the atmosphere of a particular location before returning to his studio to create a finished piece. Working in either watercolour or oil, he references his smaller studies in order to create expressive and evocative depictions of land and sea.
