Scottish artist Marie Scott, born in Kirkwall, Orkney, studied in Aberdeen under the renowned Scottish painter, William Burns. She now lives in East Lothian, close to the sea, which has a great influence on her work. Marie’s paintings tell stories of the connections between different people, places and times.
Marie describes an idyllic childhood on a small island as having cast its spell ever after; she remembers the huge towering skies, with the air thick with larks singing, and her father cutting peats. The howl of the wind, the mill pond calm of Scapa Flow, and the eerie silence after a storm. All of her work emanates from this place, its history and its ancestors.
Marie has shown extensively in group shows including the RGI at the MacLellan Gallery, Glasgow; the SSA (in which she won the Wren & Bell purchase prize 1998, and the Firth Gallery Prize, 1999), and the RSA in Edinburgh.
